EarthBrowser School Licenses

How can EarthBrowser help your school?
EarthBrowser is a great educational aid that enables students to understand many different aspects of our earth. Student centered inquiry activities help science students investigate difficult to understand concepts. By being able to see what is happening and to get a "hands on" experience, students can learn at their own pace. They can choose what they are looking at by adjusting the position and magnification of the globe and turning on and off real-time overlays to display different combinations.

Testimonials

I have used EarthBrowser in my teaching for several years and now could not teach without it. I teach introductory courses in Meteorology, Climatology, Earth System Science and Climate Change. Our new, wonderfully equipped Math & Sciences Building is crammed full of electronic teaching aids but no maps. A wall map large enough to be useful costs $400-500 and really isn't very useful to the student sitting on the other side of the classroom. The last one we had was stolen. EarthBrowser gives me instantaneous maps anywhere on the globe with physical detail that continues to amaze me. Cranking up the global cloud animation at the beginning of class is, by itself, worth a lot more than the $30 asking price. If you talk about our world in your class, you need EarthBrowser.

No matter which of the course I teach, I make sure that somewhere I demo EarthBrowser. In fact, in my last class we had the opportunity to do a comparison with Google Earth. Without exception, the class demonstrated how much more of a learning tool EarthBrowser was in comparison to Google Earth and how seemlessly they were able to integrate it with their State Educational Standards in several curriculum areas.

I am a secondary science teacher. My students have used Earthbrowser to do an interdisciplinary project where students find current weather/earthquake/hurricane information on a certain city. The students then create a "live" newscast. Students work in groups; a producer, camera person, weather person, and director. The class then watches a movie related to weather and we use the students presentations as the commercials!

I found that Earth Browser allowed my upper-elementary students to interact via the internet in real-time with the earth. The ability to call up live webcams, recent earthquakes, volcanos, and weather conditions all over the globe made teaching topics in science and social science more relevant. When students can take a close look at the weather on another part of the planet or access a live camera to see what's going on right now, it makes their learning that much more immediate and relevant. It's no longer something that's just in a book or that they have to listen to from their teacher. Perhaps the best part is that they can access any of these things at any time and in whatever order they'd like. It's dynamic, so except for the interface, it's never exactly the same experience twice, and that's an important consideration when selecting software for classroom use.

I think that this is a marvellous product that just keeps getting better and better. After my daughter saw me using my copy at work I bought a copy for my daughter's 7th grade teacher who is keen on earth sciences, and I encourage my students to make use of the browser. It is an absolutely first rate resource for studies of ecology, climatology, and current events.

When leading institutes for teachers, I use Earthbrowser to demonstrate the power of visual media to communicate complex information to students. The teachers are always enthusiastic, and many have started using Earthbrowser with their own classes. For rich visual detail that incorporates multiple sources of data, multiple representations and ease of use, Earthbrowser is a product without comparison.

I've been a fan of Earthbrowser since the earliest versions and often leave it running as a screensaver before I start a presentation. It's a fantastic way to demonstrate the beauty and complexity of the world, as well as a perfect example of how technology can enliven classroom discussion. If I'd had this to play with as a kid, I'd be a geographer now.
